KG - Genre Analysis: Horror sub-genres

Horror

Horror films strive to elicit the emotions of fear, terror and horror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness amongst others, there is more information about the conventions of horror in a previous blog titled: Conventions of Horror.

Sub-genres of Horror:

  • The Horror of personality, e.g. Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960)
  • The Horror of armageddon, e.g. Invasion of the body snatchers (Siegel, 1956)
  • The Horror of the Demonic, e.g. The Exorcist (Friedkin, 1973)
  • Slasher horror, e.g. Halloween (Carpenter, 1978)

  • Teen terror, e.g. Final Destination (Wong, 2000)

  • Serial Killers, e.g. Pyscho and Halloween [as above]
  • Satanic, e.g. Pet Sematary (Lambert, 1989)

  • Dracula
  • Frankenstein
  • Pyschological Horror, eg The Ring (Verbinski, 2002)

  • Splatter horror, or gore films, e.g. Saw (Wan, 2004)
